Hi. I’m Katalyss.
Former AP English teacher, a mixed media artist, and a recovering overachiever whose passport got more use the year her life rearranged itself than in the whole decade before it.
Here’s the short version. I spent years teaching other people’s stories until I finally left to go live one of my own. So I started traveling slowly, one place at a time, and paying attention. Really paying attention. To the legends locals tell like gossip, to the strangers who say one sentence that follows you home, to what a place does to a person who arrives carrying more than her backpack.
Venture Katalysts is what I built from that. I go somewhere and let it work on me. Then I come back and tell you what happened.
What you’ll get here
One essay a month. Free. Eight to twelve minutes of your time, which is less than you’ll spend deciding what to watch tonight.
Each essay starts with a place and ends somewhere personal. I’ll skip telling you where to stand for the best photo of the cathedral and tell you instead about what happened at the café beside it. Expect history that reads like gossip, food described with the respect it deserves, and the occasional stranger who turns out to be an oracle.
Every essay closes with Field Notes, a small collection of things worth taking home.
The wider world
Each destination lives three lives. The film on YouTube shows you what I saw. The essay here tells you what I couldn’t say to a camera. And the letter... the letter travels through actual mail, on actual paper, to the members of Lounge 143, my snail mail club.
The letter is the piece I’ll never put on the internet. That’s rather the point.
